More kids with lead poisoning
CHENZHOU Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in central China's Hunan Province admitted six more children with lead poisoning on Saturday.
That has brought the number of people found to have excessive lead levels in their blood to 19, of whom 18 are children below the age of 14, said the Chenzhou public health department in a statement.
Apart from stomach pain, most of the sick children have not developed obvious symptoms, said Wang Feixiong, a doctor with the hospital.
The patients, ranging in age from 11 months to 64 years, are mainly natives of two villages in Guiyang County, said the statement.
Wang said they had been using traditional Chinese medicine, supplemented with vitamins and trace elements, to reduce the lead levels.
Yuanshan Scrap Lead Recycle Plant in Guiyang County, which is being held responsible for the lead poisoning, has been shut down.
