More lead-poison cases confirmed
ANOTHER 13 children were diagnosed with high blood lead levels in central Chinese city of Chenzhou on Tuesday, raising the total toll to 191, health authorities said yesterday.
Tests at two medical institutions in Chenzhou in Hunan Province in the past week found 191 of 423 people tested had excessive lead levels.
Forty-six, mostly children under 14, had blood lead levels so high that they were diagnosed with lead poisoning.
Thirty-eight remained hospitalized, including three adults who demanded further checks despite normal blood lead levels, authorities said.
The cases emerged after 254 children were found with excessive levels of lead in their blood in the neighboring Jiahe County last July.
As many as 309 factories were polluting the county in 2009. Three lead plants in Chenzhou were held accountable.
