More leftover tainted milk reported
ANOTHER Chinese dairy company has been accused of using leftover melamine-laced milk powder from the 2008 nationwide scandal. Guangzhou-based Yashili Dairy Company stashed at least 30 tons of such tainted milk powder in a storage house in a county in Shanxi Province and sold them back to the market after changing packages, a source close to the matter was quoted in the Beijing-based Legal Daily yesterday.
An owner of a storage house surnamed Sun told the newspaper that Yashili rented his space from him in February 2009 for 30 tons of milk powder. Sun said the milk powder was later sold to an unknown party.
The ministry of commerce had ordered all dairy companies to destroy all the tainted milk. But Zhang Xingkuan, a lawyer who fought the dairy giants for melamine victims, said he had been to many dairy factories after the scandal and saw piles of tainted milk in storage. No authorities were there to supervise their destruction, he told the newspaper.
