More officials in graft probe, 95% have mistresses

THE deputy secretary-general of Shandong Provincial People's Government has been expelled from the Communist Party and is awaiting criminal charges for bribery, China's top disciplinary authorities said today.

Zhang Zezhong took bribes of 7.06 million yuan (US$1.13 million) for helping others to win land and construction contracts or obtain government jobs, they said.

Zhou Zhenhong, former chief of the United Front Work Department of the Guangdong Party Committee, and Li Chuncheng, former deputy Party secretary of Sichuan Province, are also probed for corruption.

More than 160,000 government and state enterprise officials were punished for disciplinary violations last year, according to official figures released today.

Beijing-based Procuratorial Daily said 95 percent of the sacked officials had mistresses.
