More sandstorms ahead, say weathermen

NORTHERN China may suffer at least another six to nine sandstorms after severe dust storms swept across 21 provinces over the past two weeks, weather forecasts predict.

The total number of sandstorms this spring is expected to surpass last year, said meteorological authorities in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, a key source of the storms, reported Chinanews.com.cn today.

At least five more are due after the largest sandstorm in seven years blasted northern China on March 19, shrouding cities in four days of clouds of and grit and dust with poor visibility. Many had to cover their faces with masks while going outside.

Twenty-three cities, included Beijing and Shanghai, suffered severe air pollution on Sunday. The storm covered 1.4 million square kilometers, a seventh of China's land mass, said the national environmental bureau today.

The government put 377 million yuan (US$57.8 million) into a project aiming at curbing sandstorms in Beijing, Hebei and Shanxi Provinces and the Inner Mongolia Region in 2002.

China has suffered an average of nine dust storms a year over the past decade.
