More volunteers become organ donors
MORE than 104,000 volunteers registered to be organ donors in China in 2016, up by three times than that in the previous year, the Red Cross Society of China said on Friday.
The organization added that the recorded organ donation cases in 2016 reached 4,080 in 2016, with 11,296 organs donated, up nearly by half than in 2015.
The project on voluntarily deceased organ donation started in China since March 2010, and voluntary organ donation has become the main source of human organs in the country.
As of the end of last year, there were a total of 999,6 organ donations in China, and nearly 170,000 volunteers registered to donate their organs after death.
The organization added that the work is still preliminary in China and its development in different areas is not even, which needs more policy support from authorities and trust from the public.
Huang Jiefu, director of the China Organ Donation and Transplantation Commission and chairman of China Organ Transplantation Development Foundation, was awarded a special contribution award for his work on the development of China's organ donation by Chen Zhu during the event. Chen is the president of the red cross society and vice chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee.
