Most airline blankets not sanitized, insider reveals

A whistleblower revealed that a company that does laundry for a leading domestic airline failed to wash or sanitize the bulk of its blankets before sending them back for reuse.

Only blankets with obvious stains were washed while the rest were simply packed for reuse. Usually, only about 20 percent of the blankets were washed by the Beijing-based Yingtailong Airline Appliance Co, said the unnamed insider, Beijing Times reported today.

The whistleblower also said that no disinfectants were added while the blankets and headsets were cleaned, and the airline did not conduct any spot check, as it was supposed to do, for several months.

The airline has set up a team to investigate the company after the allegations were made public.

The textile products which contact the skin must be washed and sanitized after each use. Unwashed blankets could spread germs and even cause cross infections, Han Ming, a professor of Peking University's School of Public Health, told the newspaper.
