Most overseas returnees pick jobs at private firms

MORE than 70 percent of Chinese students who study abroad come back to work, and the majority of the overseas returnees choose to work in private companies instead of multinationals, a report said yesterday.

Only about 11 percent of overseas returnees work in multinational companies, while 71.2 percent end up in private companies, according to the report.

Some overseas returnees complained that it's more and more difficult for them to find a job in the top 500 companies, large-scale state-owned enterprises and research institutes.

"Many people don't have many requirements for the type of companies to work in, with the robust development of the private companies and the increasing employment pressure," the report said.

Overseas returnees usually have a high salary in private companies because their excellent language skills and overseas experience are prone to stand out more in a private company than in a foreign company.

The starting salaries for many overseas returnees are not very high, according to the report issued by a research institute of EIC Group, one of the international education service agencies recognized by the Ministry of Education.

Nearly 40 percent overseas returnees earn less than 40,000 yuan (US$6,393) a year, according to the report, which polled more than 7,000 people with study abroad experience.

Graduates from the United States generally enjoy higher salaries. Nearly 50 percent of US returnees earn more than 60,000 yuan a year, higher than the average.
