Mother abandons tot, who starves
AN eight-month-old boy has been reduced to skin and bones after his mother disappeared, leaving him starving alone for eight days at their home in rural Hainan Province.
His father Liang discovered the baby when he came home from work eight days after the mother's disappearance, yesterday's China News Service reported.
The boy is recovering at Qiongshan People's Hospital. His doctor Lin Jian said the boy is seriously malnourished and dehydrated after his ordeal.
His mother had been in a low mood and took the boy's three-year-old sister when she left, according to neighbors.
The boy fell ill on June 23 and she borrowed 200 yuan (US$29) from Liang's sister to send him to hospital.
But she disappeared with the money, leaving behind the boy alone at home.
Liang's brother, who lives in the same house occasionally, came over and fed the baby due to the poor relationship with the couple.
Liang has now checked the boy out of the hospital as he could hardly afford the cost. He had borrowed more than 3,000 yuan to cover the treatment, he said.
In southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a woman has disappeared leaving her newborn girl at the roadside, China News Service reported.
The girl, discovered yesterday hours after the birth by passengers beside a wall in Nanning, Guangxi's capital, has been sent to a local hospital.
She was found naked and blood-smeared, with the umbilical cord uncut, according to witnesses.
