Mother and grandma in baby-selling case

A WOMAN and her mother will be charged with baby trafficking in Beijing for allegedly selling her 6-month-old daughter for 10,000 yuan (US$1,477).

Fengtai District People's Court will soon hear the case, yesterday's Beijing Times reported.

The 21-year-old woman surnamed Wang was working in Beijing before she married her husband last May. But they didn't hold a wedding ceremony at Wang's hometown in Beijing's neighboring Hebei Province, which angered Wang's mother.

Last August Wang gave birth to a baby girl and felt so tired with taking care of the baby alone that she suggested sending her to Hebei for her mother to raise, the report said. Her mother refused, so Wang asked her mother to find a buyer.

On January 28, Wang and her mother sold the baby to a childless couple, but her husband was shocked at the discovery and called police.
