A MOTHER in northwestern Shaanxi Province beat her young son so badly he was left with a multitude of physical problems — because she believed a fortuneteller who said he would bring her bad luck.
The 5-year-old has had corrective surgery but will need additional operations since he can’t move his limbs. He faces the risk of being paralyzed for life, yesterday’s Xi’an Evening News reported, quoting one of his doctors.
His mother, a 27-year-old woman surnamed Liu, attacked the boy when he was just three years old, according to her husband’s parents. His grandparents sent him to hospital after finding the boy beaten unconscious.
The grandparents said they borrowed 120,000 yuan (US$19,000) to pay for the boy to undergo surgery.
The woman had planned to have an abortion when she realized she was pregnant with her second child.
However, she was persuaded to give birth to the baby, the report said.
Before his birth, a fortuneteller predicted that the child would bring her misfortune.
