Mother claims stab waitress being tortured

THE mother of a waitress who stabbed a local government official to death and injured another said her daughter is innocent and being tortured in detention.

The waitress, Deng Yujiao, has been hospitalized for "observation" at Youfu Hospital, Enshi, in central China's Hubei Province, after police suggested she was mentally ill when they discovered antidepressants in her handbag.

Deng killed a local official Deng Guida and injured his colleague Huang Dezhi when they visited an entertainment venue in Hubei's Badong County where Deng worked on May 10. A dispute broke out after the officials' requests for "special service" were rejected by the waitress. "Special service" is usually understood to mean sex.

Deng called the police after the stabbings and she was sent to Youfu Hospital on May 12.

Police have detained Deng on manslaughter charges.

But Deng's mother Zhang Shumei told the Orient Today newspaper that the "observation" was actually torture, as her daughter has been confined to bed for days and has had her arms and legs tied up tightly.

Footage aired by the Enshi TV station showed Deng in the hospital bed, crying: "Papa, papa, they beat me..."

Zhang said she was not allowed to visit her daughter.

Zhang's story was backed up to certain degree by the hospital.

Doctor Li Yu said the hospital has offered no treatment so far, because of a pending psychological assessment.

"If her disease, if she has any, is controlled by treatment, then an assessment will be difficult to carry out," he explained.

Two lawyers, on behalf of Zhang, have asked Badong police if they can interview Deng, today's Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Lawyers Xia Lin and Xia Nan from the Beijing Huayi Lawyers Firm submitted an application yesterday afternoon. They have agreed to provide free assistance to Zhang while the police investigation is being carried out.

Normally police allow lawyers to meet clients within 48 hours, Xia Lin said.

Zhang believes her daughter is innocent and that her attack was merely self-defense.

"She must have been compelled to carry out this attack," Zhang said.

Zhang admitted Deng has long suffered from amnesia and had been taking depressants. But she had never attacked people, she said.
