Mother dies rescuing son from blaze

A WOMAN sheltered her six-year-old son with her own body from the fire engulfing their home in east China's Zhejiang Province, but died after firemen rescued the boy, today's Youth Times newspaper reported.

The boy, Wu Yuntian, is recovering from severe burns to 40 percent of his body, having undergone 13 surgical operations in the past five months, including four skull operations at a hospital in Wenzhou City.

He still needs another four operations, his father told the newspaper, and hasn't yet been told his mother has died.

The fire broke out on February 14, Chinese New Year, while he and his mother, 31-year-old Wu Jianju, were taking a nap.

The mother was awakened by the smoke and called her husband for help. Flames blocked the door and bars prevented their escape from the window.

Firefighters cut through the window bars to rescue the son, who was in a coma and sent to Wenzhou Medical School's No.1 Affiliated Hospital

People touched by the tragedy donated more than 370,000 yuan (US$54,627) to the poverty-stricken father and son.

All the money has been spent on the treatment, the father said.
