Mother killed girl in row over money

A 16-year-old girl in the southern Guangdong Province was allegedly suffocated by her mother after a row over money.

A local prosecutor's office has approved the arrest of the mother, Guangzhou-based New Express Daily reported yesterday.

The victim, a middle school graduate, had asked her mother, surnamed Xie, for 5,900 yuan (US$920) to buy an Apple computer.

Xie told police after her arrest in Liwan District of Guangzhou that there was a quarrel when she refused to give her daughter the money.

The dispute escalated into a fight and Xie tripped the girl and held her with her face pressed into a pillow.

Xie said her daughter was cursing her, so she sat on the girl's back and pushed her face into the pillow until she could no longer speak.

After her daughter's screams had faded, Xie called the police and an ambulance, but the girl was found to be dead when they arrived.

Xie is accused of causing intentional harm to her daughter, prosecutors said.
