Mother sues hospital over botched op

A MOTHER has filed a lawsuit against a Jiangsu Province hospital after a second operation on her seven-year-old son's heart revealed a life-threatening blunder.

The mother surnamed Chen said that Changzhou No.1 hospital inserted an occluder in her son's heart when he was 17 months old to seal a defect but put it in the wrong place, Yangtze Evening News reported today.

A Beijing hospital specializing in heart disease opened up his chest in April last year and videotaped the process, showing the hole in the heart was still there, the report said.

Doctors sealed the defect again but could not remove the misplaced device because it could tear the heart tissue and was too risky, the boy's doctor You Bin said.

Now the occluder could kill him at any time by causing an embolism, said Li Fen, an expert in children's heart disease at Shanghai Children's Medical Center.

Investigation of the case is continuing and the Changzhou hospital refused to comment.
