Mother’s superstition results in beating of child until deformation

A MOTHER in Shaanxi Province beat her young son so badly that it left him with a multitude of physical problems, including deformed arms and legs, because she believed a fortuneteller’s prediction that her son would bring her misfortune, the Xi’an Evening News reported.
The 5-year-old boy has had corrective surgery and was expected to have additional surgery since he could not move his limbs and he was facing the risk of being paralyzed for life, the report quoting a doctor as saying.
The boy also was incontinent, the report said.
His mother, a 27-year-old woman surnamed Liu, abused the boy when he was three years old, according to her husband’s parents. His grandparents sent him to hospital after finding the boy was beaten unconscious, and had many fractured bones. It was not disclosed whether the mother was investigated by police.
The grandparents said they borrowed 120,000 yuan (US$19,000) to pay for the boy to undergo surgery.
The woman planned to have an abortion when she realizing she was pregnant with the boy, a second child in the family. However, she was persuaded to give birth to baby, the report said.
Before his birth, she visited a fortuneteller, who predicted the child would bring her misfortune, the report said.
