Mother's violence puts daughter, 3, in coma
A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl in southern China has been in a deep coma for two days with a swollen head and bruises after her mother smashed her to the ground.
The girl, whose name was not released, is in intensive care at Nanshan Hospital in Guangdong Province's Shenzhen City, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
Her mother was caught by police on Wednesday when she sneaked into the hospital to see the daughter, according to the newspaper.
Police said the mother, 24, is two months pregnant and may be exempt from criminal punishment.
The girl was sent to the hospital on Tuesday, a doctor surnamed Hong said.
The father hinted that the girl had been injured by her mother.
Doctors found the girl had suffered a brain hemorrhage, apparently after a strong bump. They performed an emergency surgery to remove a blood clot, but the girl remains dependent on a respirator, Hong said.
The girl, who had been living with her grandma in central China's Hubei Province, has been with her parents in Shenzhen since August, said the father, a 27-year-old painter who married the girl's mother in 2006.
The wife developed a bad temper after getting pregnant again and often beat their daughter for being "too naughty," the father said.
The family's landlord said he often heard the girl crying at home.
The family has spent more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,464) on the medical bill, with more costs expected.
