Moutai cuts population for liquor growth

SOME 16,000 people living in and around Moutai, a town in southwest Guizhou Province, are being relocated to make way for the country's best known liquor producer to improve local environment.

The company, Kweichow Moutai, has earmarked 5 billion yuan (US$753 million) to remove about one third of the homes near its distilleries to a newly-built residential complex which covers a distant area of about three square kilometers, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

The relocation is due to be completed by 2015 and aims to cut the town's population from 50,000 to 15,000, a size environmental experts believe suitable for the production of Moutai, China's "national liquor."

The company produced 23,000 tons of base liquor in 2009 and will invest 686.9 million yuan (US$102.9 million) in the next five years to boost output by almost 87 percent over its 2009 level.
