Moutai refutes claim that 90% of its liquor is fake

CHINESE premium liquor producer Kweichow Moutai dismissed the allegations that 90 percent of the distilled Moutai liquor on store shelves was bogus.

The honorary chairman of Kweichow Moutai Group, Ji Keliang, claimed that no more than 5 percent of the Moutai on sale was substandard, China News Service reported.

"We confiscated 300 tons of fake Moutai in the last three years while we sold 30,000 tons every year," Ji said.

Earlier media reports said the group produced only 20,000 tons in 2009, but the whole nation consumed 200,000 tons in 2010. Therefore, 90 percent of the famous liquor must be bogus.

Ji rejected the allegations. "Our revenue was 20 billion yuan (US$3.17 billion) last year. If the figures were true, our revenue should be over 200 billion yuan. However, the whole liquor industry just earned 300 billion yuan last year. Did you turn a blind eye to other producers?" China News Service quoted him as saying.

Ji said the group would spare no effort to crack down on counterfeit Moutai.
