Moutai swapper sentenced to six months in custody

A young man who teamed up with a friend to replace 11 bottles of genuine Moutai, China's best-known liquor, with fake ones in a local hotel was sentenced to six months in detention with a six-month reprieve, a Zhabei District court ruled yesterday.

The 22-year-old convict surnamed Zhu and his friend, a waiter in the unnamed hotel, swapped Moutai with fake liquor in the hotel's warehouse three times last November, this February and April.

Zhu bought the genuine Moutai at 800 yuan (US$127) per bottle from his friend while the market price is 1,980 yuan. He sold the 11 bottles and made a profit of 12,100 yuan, the court heard.

Zhu was caught on March 30 and returned all his illegal earnings.

The court said Zhu's accomplice was tried separately and no verdict has been made yet.
