Movie site boss arrested
THE general manager of a Chinese movie website that claimed in adverts to be building a legal movie-sharing platform has been arrested on charges of copyright infringement.
Prosecutors in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, approved the arrest of Li Deyi, of Hangzhou-based Cnnip.com, who is said to have provided unauthorized movies for showing in Internet cafes and to individuals, Today Morning Express reported.
The website had sold its online viewing and downloading service to more than 20,000 Internet cafes, nearly 10 percent of China's total, as of last December, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.
The company was said to have charged each cafe some 5,000 yuan (US$759) for the service.
Last July, the China Film Copyright Protection Association sued the website and several cafes for showing movies without permission. The case was settled out of court.
