Movies are galloping back after coronavirus

Xu Xiao鈥檚 busy day started when all the 80-plus horses on his farm were booked out for movie and television shoots at Hengdian World Studios, known as the 鈥淐hinese Hollywood,鈥 in east China鈥檚 Zhejiang Province.
鈥淚 have been engaged in the film industry for more than 30 years, and I have rarely been as busy as I am now,鈥 said Xu, manager of the horse farm at the studios, one of China鈥檚 biggest film and TV program production centers and a barometer of the film industry.
This time last year, film crews needed a maximum of 30 horses each day.
Film shoots were suspended for several months in Hengdian due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
With the epidemic waning, however, film and teleplay crews have been rushing back to resume production.
According to statistics from Hengdian World Studios, October saw 47 film and teleplay crews filming and 65 making preparations.
That is a year-on-year increase of 67 percent and 41 percent, respectively.
Due to a surge in film shoots, extras are also in high demand.
鈥淭here aren鈥檛 enough extras,鈥 said Hu Qin, executive producer of 鈥淏ailingtan,鈥 an internet TV series that started shooting in August.
鈥淚t鈥檚 quite common for there to be more extras than jobs. However, film crews are competing for extras now.鈥
Zhu Guoqiang, an official with the administration committee of Hengdian World Studios, said that there are about 6,000 extras registered with the actors鈥 guild at the studios.
That was an increase of 10 percent over previous years.
The actors鈥 guild will provide around 444,000 extras for film shoots in 2020, compared with 419,000 last year
鈥淭his year has also seen significant growth of modern TV series and cinema film shoots, leading to a recovery of the industry,鈥 said Zhao Yongqing, general manager of Zhejiang Dongyang Hengdian Movie Center Management Service Co.
鈥淣ow, all 20 high-standard studios for modern TV series are booked out and the demand for the reservation of normal studios is also high,鈥 Zhao added.
The recent strong performance of cinemas has also sent a positive signal to the reviving industry.
