Mt Everest has grown, moved in past decade

Mount Everest has moved 40 centimeters to the northeast over the past 10 years, while its height has increased by 3cm, the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation said yesterday.
Data collected since 2005 show that the world鈥檚 highest peak has been moving 4cm and growing 0.3cm every year.
The mountain is located on the collision belt for the boundary between the Indian and the Eurasian Plates, where the crustal movements are active.
Geographical changes in the area have great influence on the climate, environment and ecology of east and south Asia, experts said.
The administration set up a satellite monitoring system to observe Everest鈥檚 movements in 2005.
Observers with the department found that it shifted 3cm southwestward after the devastating Nepal earthquake on April 25, while the height of the mountain was unchanged.
