Mudslide death toll rises to 16 in Yunnan
The death toll from a mudslide that struck a village in Zhenxiong County, Yunnan Province at 8:20am today has gone up to 16, local officials said.
About 46 people in 16 households are feared buried in the mud, but their exact number is still unclear as rescue operation continues, the China News Service reported.
More than 300 rescuers have rushed to the scene and dug out 16 bodies, including a family of seven. Injured villagers have been sent to a hospital but their number cannot be confirmed immediately, the report said.
Xiao Weidong, a local fire brigade officer, said it is very difficult to save trapped victims in the erased village about 200,000 square meters in area in cold weather and at a high altitude.
"On our way here, we saw ice everywhere," he said.
Weather forecast showed there are sleet and snow today through Sunday.
