Mudslide death toll rises to 44

THE death toll from a massive mudslide triggered by heavy rain and hail in a poor mountainous region of northwestern China has risen to 44, officials said.

The Civil Affairs Ministry said 26 people were missing and that power and telecommunications had been disrupted in Minxian, Zhangxian and Weiyuan counties in Gansu Province.

The ministry said yesterday that nearly 150,000 people had been evacuated and needed emergency assistance as a result of the storm that battered the county on Thursday evening and triggered the mudslide in one of China's poorest regions.

Relief teams have taken blankets and clothing to the area. The central government says it will provide funds for relief work and rebuilding.

Persistent rain and cold weather yesterday hindered rescue operations in Minxian County.

Another 87 people were sent to hospital and nearly 30,000 were evacuated as rain continued to ravage the area, bringing temperatures down to zero in more mountainous areas.

More rain was expected to hit the county over the next three days, local forecasters said.
