Mum gives son a second chance at life

A WOMAN in central China's Hubei Province has given her son a second chance at life by donating part of her liver to him, the Wuhan Evening News reported.

The mother, Chen Yurong, 55 of Hubei's capital Wuhan City, had a portion of her liver removed yesterday at Wuhan's Tongji University after a seven-month jogging program to improve her liver function.

Her healthy liver could give her son another 30-50 years, Dr Chen Xiaoping said.

The son, Ye Haibing, 31, has had a congenital liver disease for 18 years and was terminally ill. Doctors said his only hope was a liver transplant.

Chen planned to make the donation in February but doctors rejected the offer, saying the liver was fatty and unhealthy.

To improve her liver, Chen started a weight-loss program and jogged for 10 kilometers everyday. Seven months later doctors were surprised to find her liver was functioning normally again.

Tongji Hospital has waived the costs of the transplant which could total 1 million yuan (US$146,460).
