Munitions-laden truck set free by highway police
THE container truck detained on Sunday for carrying more than 12,000 artillery shells in Enshi, central Hubei Province was doing a routine military assignment and it was released the next morning, the Enshi News reported today.
The truck was driving on Highway G50 from Chongqing in western China to Jilin Province in northeast China when it was stopped by police in Enshi City. With reflective strips to warn people of dangerous cargo, the truck caught patrol police attention in a section of the highway that bans flammable and explosive goods.
The police were surprised to find 12,033 shrapnel shells and armor-piercing shells packaged in 236 boxes and weighing over 10 tons.
The driver said he was entrusted by a company in Chongqing to deliver the goods to Jilin Province and he had no idea of goods in the container.
