Murder gang demanded cash for mine 'accident'
NINE members of a gang believed to have murdered a mentally disabled man at a mine to try to claim accident compensation have been detained in Jiangxi Province.
Police said the victim, who was not identified, was bought by the gang for 5,200 yuan from a household in Sichuan Province's Leibo County and taken to work in a lead-zinc mine in Fuzhou City's Dongxiang County.
Each member of the gang had a specific job, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday, one faking identity cards, another introducing the victim to the mine, five killing him at work and two pretending to be his relatives.
The "relatives" demanded compensation from the mine company following the "accident," Li Bin, a detective involved in the case, said.
On March 11, the victim was said to have fallen to his death down a 37-meter ventilation shaft while he was supposed to be working in the mine.
"We couldn't understand why he would have gone up there," said Zou Ye, director of the local police station.
Three days later, two men claiming to be cousins of the dead man went to the Dongxiang Lead Zinc Mining Co Ltd for compensation, bringing a letter of attorney of the victim's wife and the death certificate, Zou said.
"They asked directly for 1.2 million yuan (US$183,626)," said Li Xiangtang, a company manager.
Meanwhile, police had found that the victim's identity card had been forged and when the "cousins" were questioned as part of the investigation, police said they admitted their part in the plot.
