Murder gang receive sentences

A man and four accomplices were sentenced by a south China court over the death of a local government official.

Chen Jun, the ringleader of the attack, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. Ruan Yuming, one of the accomplices, also received a death penalty with reprieve. The other gang members, Li Zhongyan, Chen Pixing and Ruan Rucong, faced jail terms from one year to life imprisonment, the Guangdong Higher People's Court ruled.

Chen Jun was found to have hired Ruan Yuming, Li and Chen Pixing to attack Huang Zhaoluan, former vice chairman of Lianjiang City's People's Political Consultative Conference and former headmaster of Lianjiang Middle School, China News Service reported on Thursday.

Huang was ambushed by Ruan Yuming and Li on the morning of October 20, 2008, when walking out of his home with his daughter. He was stabbed repeatedly and left at his doorstep. Later he died from blood loss before he could be taken to hospital.

Ruan Yuming and Li fled the scene on a motorcycle driven by Chen Pixing and hid in Ruan Rucong's rented house. Chen Jun gave 4,300 yuan (US$646) to Ruan Yuming, Li and Chen Pixing.

Chen Jun, the plotter of the assault, received a two-year reprieve because he originally instructed the gang to only stab Huang's legs and was cooperative during the i°?nvestigation, the court said.

Huang was a respected member of the community and was elected to the top 10 outstanding young people in 2003 in Zhanjiang City.
