Murder suspect admits to running over victim
AN official in northeast China admitted running into a student with his car during a retrial yesterday in which he was charged with murder.
The case was heard by the Intermediate People's Court in Yingkou City.
Prosecutors said Zheng Ximing, former deputy director of the Gaizhou Detention House in Liaoning Province, crashed into middle school student Jiang Xiaonan with a sedan on January 14 and then put the unconscious boy in his vehicle and fled the scene. He later abandoned Jiang in the street. The boy was later found by pedestrians and rushed to hospital. He died 11 days later from serious head injuries.
The court first heard the case on May 31, but didn't issue a judgement due to lack of detailed evidence.
Zheng admitted to burning the blood-stained car cushions and seat covers, as well as changing the bumper and lights in a garage in order to avoid getting caught. Zheng also told the court he drove to work that day pretending as if nothing had happened.
The senior police officer then pled for leniency, saying he confessed on January 29. But prosecutors countered that police had already identified him as a key suspect and that he tried to cover up his crime in the first two interrogations before surrendering.
Prosecutors told the court Zheng was guilty of breaking the law by abandoning the victim after the accident, therefore the boy didn't receive timely medical treatment and died as a result. Thus, Zheng should be punished for murder, prosecutors said.
The verdict will be announced in a few days.
The case has triggered a public uproar.
