Murder verdicts quashed by court
FOUR men sentenced to death in 1999 for robbery and murder were yesterday acquitted by the Higher People’s Court in southeast China’s Fujian Province.
In January 1994, a 66-year-old man was found dead at his home in Putian City.
Xu Jinlong, Zhang Meilai, Xu Yusen and Cai Jinsen, who all lived nearby, were quickly identified as suspects and detained.
Five years later, they were sentenced to death suspended for two years.
All four appealed and the provincial procuratorate recommended a retrial in February 2014 on the basis of insufficient evidence.
The Higher People’s Court of Fujian heard the case in Putian yesterday and found some witness testimony contradictory and possible forgery of the fingerprints of a key witness.
The original sentences were quashed and the defendants released.
