Murderous drug gang begins trial

NINETEEN members of a mafia-linked gang dubbed the most ferocious in the past decade went on trial today at Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court for trafficking 50 kilograms of drugs, as well as killing four people.

Families of the victims demanded compensation totaling 2 million yuan (US$292,822) from leading gang members including Wu Zhijian, but Wu didn't respond to the demand, today's Yangcheng Evening News reported.

Anyone convicted of making or selling more than 50 grams of methamphetamine, or ice, faces the death sentence.

Prosecutors alleged Wu started producing drugs in 2007 and asked gang members to sell them.

Police seized several batches of drugs from gang members between 2007 and 2009, all containing methamphetamine or cocaine.

To protect the illegal business, Wu bought 10 guns, explosives and bullets to arm some key henchmen, the report said.

He was finally caught last year when Wu suffered road rage over a traffic incident and threatened to shoot the other driver dead. However, the other driver was an undercover policeman who caught him and his brother in Guangdong's Huaiji County.

Police later seized the guns and explosives Wu had transferred from Guangzhou to Huaiji.

Wu is also charged with kidnapping ring member Zhang Hongbo in 2008 after blaming him for skimming off the profits from drug sales. Cutting off Zhang's fingers to warn other ring members, Wu forced Zhang to write down an IOU for 1 million yuan. He also called Zhang's family and asked them to pay him 86,000 yuan.

Wu was also charged with killing four gang members, the report said
