Murder-suicide leaves 2 monks dead
POLICE in Taiwan said yesterday that a visiting abbot from east China's Jiangsu Province who was found dead in his hotel bed was murdered by a monk companion after the two quarreled.
Investigators in Hsinchu City in Taiwan's northwest, said they believe a monk identified as Chunru, 53, murdered abbot Jingran, 33, and then jumped to his death from the 13th floor of the Forte Hotel on Wednesday morning, according to Xinhua news agency.
Officers received a report of the deaths shortly before 8am from the Xuan Zang Culture and Education Foundation, which had invited the monks to Taiwan, according to the director of the Hsinchu police station that responded to the scene.
The official, surnamed Huang, said crime scene investigators found that Jingran, whose face showed signs of traumatic force, had been dead for a long time when his roommate, Chunru, jumped from the hotel's top floor between 6am and 7am.
Hotel video showed no other person had entered the room during the period when the murder apparently occurred.
The monks were part of a six-member delegation from the Linggu Temple in Nanjing, Jiangsu's capital city. Jingran was chief of the temple, while Chunru was the temple supervisor, in charge of administrative affairs.
Lin Bowen, the head of the Taiwan-based fund that arranged the exchange trip, became suspicious after the two monks missed their breakfast on Wednesday morning, a China News Service report said.
After the bodies were discovered, police said the right side of Jingran's face, the back of his skull and his arms and legs were smashed, indicating a brutal attack.
Other monks told Taiwanese police that the two men quarreled on Tuesday after the abbot scolded Chunru for losing his entrance document for Taiwan.
But officers said yesterday they were still investigating the motive for the killing.
