Museum technician punished for damaging antique plate
The technician of the Palace Museum in Beijing who accidentally damaged a centuries-old porcelain plate in a scientific testing received an administrative penalty while the antique research department chief was given a warning.
The plate made by the famous Ge Kiln in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) was placed on the platform of a testing instrument. The technician keyed in a wrong number in its computer, causing the platform to rise too high and breaking the plate into six pieces, the museum said on its website today.
The mishap exposed loopholes in the management of the Palace Museum which is located inside the Forbidden City. The museum, which was embarrassed by a theft in May, vowed to learn from the accident and improve its management so as to better protect the country's legacies.
