Museum thief in appeal
A THIEF who stole exhibits from the Palace Museum in Beijing's Forbidden City is appealing against his sentence.
On Monday, Shi Baikui was sentenced to 13 years in jail and fined 13,000 yuan (US$2,058) for stealing nine jewelry boxes.
But his lawyer, Huang Changyong, argued that "it was just a normal theft, except for the location," and said the sentence should be less than three years, the Legal Evening News reported.
While the stolen objects were insured for around 410,000 yuan, they have not been verified as genuine and meriting this value, Huang said.
Huang said Shi, 28, will lodge an appeal for leniency.
