Mystery death of official in corruption probe

A GOVERNMENT official from central China's Henan Province died of skull fractures and extensive bruises during a corruption probe into his superior, his wife told today's Beijing News.

An autopsy will determine the cause of his death with results expected in three days, Xu Guangjing, vice secretary-in-chief of Dengzhou City's Party committee, told the newspaper. He confirmed that Liu Yunfeng, 43, an official with Dengzhou Construction Bureau, died during the inquiry.

Liu was called on Monday morning for an inquiry during a corruption investigation involving his superior, a former bureau director surnamed Guo, his wife Mei Lixin said.

Next day a family member was told that Liu had died at Dengzhou No.3 People's Hospital and been transferred to the city's funeral home.

The family found Liu had skull fractures, a bloody face and bruises across his body. Bureau officials later told Mei that Liu had committed suicide.
