Mystery deaths: 8 kids, all named Cai
AN eighth child surnamed Cai has died an abnormal death this year in Tiantai County of east China's Zhejiang Province.
Police said the eight deaths were all accidents, occurring in three non-related cases, yesterday's www.zjol.com reported.
Police have ruled out murder in the accidents after careful investigation, Wang Xiejiao, political commissar of Tiantai Police, told the news Website.
The last victim was a 6-year-old girl, Cai Shaohan, who was found hanged by a telephone wire in a telephone booth on March 2 in front of the Tiantai Experimental Middle School, beside her parents' food store, Tiantai government told www.zjol.com. Police investigation showed she suffered no other injuries than a suffocation mark by a telephone wire.
Her parents accepted the investigation results and got 88,000 yuan (US$12,892) compensation from the telephone booth's owner, the government said.
Despite that, the father who said he still found it hard to face the fact, published his doubts online and said he was told by a local funeral-house worker that his girl was the eighth child surnamed Cai to have died an abnormal death this year in the county.
The first five children, three girls and two boys aged 7 to 13 from a Cai family in Tiantai's Xialuwang Village, were reported missing on February 18.
Their bodies were found in a fish pond four days later. Police investigations showed the children accidentally drowned.
Their family signed a compensation agreement, worth 480,000 yuan (US$70,311), with the person leasing the fish pond, on February 28.
Days later, another two girls surnamed Cai were drowned in Tiantai's Pingzheng Town.
