Mystery diary puts official under investigation

A police officer in Hubei Province was removed from his post after the local disciplinary authority began investigating his corruption allegations as detailed in an online diary.

The Enshi Prefecture Government said in a notice on its website that Tan Zhiguo, deputy director of Enshi Public Security Bureau, had been removed from his duty, the Beijing News reported today.

"We don't know yet if Tan was involved in any economic violations. The local disciplinary authority will announce the result soon," Li Yunkai, director of Enshi Public Security Bureau, was quoted as saying.

The diary written in the first person started to circulate on Internet last November. Although the diary used initials for locations and names, netizens found the person's career path matched that of Tan. The diary recorded details of taking bribes and having extramarital affairs.

Tan cried for innocence and requested the authority to investigate him. "If I am found guilty I would accept any punishment," Tan said.
