Mystery over suspect's death in custody
MYSTERY surrounds the sudden death of a suspect in custody in central China – his family disputes the police explanation of a heart attack triggered by falling in a toilet.
The body of theft suspect Chen Xujin 40, was covered in more than 30 suspicious wounds, including blood-filled eyes and mouth, his family told Southern Metropolis Daily today.
An autopsy found bleeding in his brain and there were bruises around his neck, his sister Chen Jingzhu told the newspaper.
However, the doctor involved said the autopsy report did not record the brain bleeding because his body was covered in bruises after dying in custody in Xiushui County, Jianxi Province.
A local prosecutor surnamed Zhang ruled out violence in Chen's death. The investigation concluded that he died from a heart attack after he fell down in the toilet while suffering from diarrhea, the report said.
Zhang said the bruises were suffered in the fall. He blamed the diarrhea on Chen eating too much in the detention center's canteen – although Chen's family told the newspaper that he'd called to ask for money to buy food.
The head of Xiushui detention house has now been sacked, the report said.
