‘Mystery woman’ advising test cheats is chief exam supervisor

A “MYSTERY woman” seen in a TV expose reassuring students being paid to take examinations for rich candidates in central China’s Henan Province is a chief exam supervisor, police said yesterday.

A China Central Television investigation revealed that university students received cash to sit the college entrance exam for the children of the rich and powerful and that examiners were bribed.

In CCTV’s footage, on the first day of the exam on June 7, a woman arrives as the fake candidates and the families of the students who should be sitting the test are having a meal.

She tells the exam sitters that there’s no need to worry if fingerprint membranes bearing the genuine candidates’ prints are not accepted by fingerprint scanners.

They will still be admitted to the exam hall “because money has its magic,” they are told.

“You just finish the exam as you should and don’t worry or be affected, because I promise there will be no trouble,” adds the woman.

Video footage bears out this confidence. A fake candidate is shown being allowed into the exam hall despite repeatedly failing the fingerprint test.

The chief exam supervisor is among those being investigated by police. Anyone involved will be severely punished, said Guo Baohong, deputy head of Qixian County in Henan.

So far, 35 exam supervisors in Henan’s Qixian County and Tongxu County are being questioned by police, local authorities said. Three university students suspected of being involved are being quizzed by Tongxu police, they added.

The Ministry of Education said students sitting the exam would have their scores nullified and college students involved would be expelled.

In a follow-up report, a fake exam sitter, his identity disguised, told how he became involved.

He said meals and accommodation were organized by the parents involved and everything went smoothly, despite his false prints being rejected.

As exam supervisors had been bribed, nobody questioned his identity.

“Even though I failed the fingerprint machine check — there was probably dust on the membranes — I was still allowed in,” he said.

“The teacher who checked my ID card turned a blind eye even though he knew I was not the sitter,” he added.

The student said the lure of money, plus fear of reprisals, stopped him from telling the authorities.

“My whole life has now been destroyed,” said the student, who had planned to study for a postgraduate qualification.

Authorities in Henan said nearly 130 college students were paid by applicants’ families to sit the exam.

They were recruited through messages written on toilet walls at several campuses in neighboring Hubei Province.

These included the renowned Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Technology and Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, CCTV said.
