NE China shaken by 6.6-magnitude quake in Russia
AN earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted Russia at 2:10 pm Beijing Time today, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The epicenter was monitored at 54.2 degrees north latitude and 123.7 degrees east longitude with a depth of 10 kilometers, the center said.
The US Geological Survey said it was a 5.9-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter 13.8 km deep.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties or property loss.
The quake was felt in parts of northeastern China's Heilongjiang Province, which borders Russia.
People in an 18-story government building in the city of Heihe felt the tremors and ran out of the building, said a municipal government official.
Li Guiqing is a resident of Beiji Village in Mohe County, the closest place in China to the epicenter.
"The ground kept shaking for one or two minutes and, while running out of my house, I heard my bowls and plates knocking against one another in the cabinet," Li said.
"There is no damage in my house, but some neighbors said that they felt nauseous after the shake," he said.
