NPC removes ex-mayor

A FORMER mayor has been removed from the National People's Congress for his role in last year's tainted milk scandal, the country's top legislature said yesterday.

Ji Chuntang, former mayor of Shijiazhuang City, capital of Hebei Province, covered up the scandal and failed to take appropriate action, the province's legislature said on May 27. The provincial legislature submitted the decision to the NPC Standing Committee yesterday in Beijing.

Ji resigned as Shijiazhuang's mayor in September when the scandal was exposed. He was sacked as deputy secretary of the Shijiazhuang Committee of the CPC.

Milk powder produced by the now bankrupt Sanlu Group, which was based in Shijiazhuang City, was found tainted with melamine in September. The group's milk products were at the heart of a scandal that caused the deaths of six children and sickened more than 300,000 others.
