NZ man throws Chinese girl into pool
POLICE have caught a man from New Zealand who bullied a five-year-old girl by holding her high in the air and throwing her into a swimming pool yesterday in Jinan City, Shandong Province.
Police said the man surnamed Phillips is in his fifties and a teacher at Shandong University of Finance and Economics. The New Zealander bullied the girl simply because she bumped into him in the swimming pool, the girl's family told Qilu Evening News.
The man has apologized to the girl, nicknamed Dongdong, and compensated her for his behavior, the report said, citing police.
The incident occurred at a swimming pool at a hotel in Jinan at about 4pm yesterday. Dongdong's grandmother was shocked to see the foreigner holding the little girl high in the air before throwing her into the pool, the newspaper reported.
The elderly woman who was not named told Qilu Evening News that a Chinese man immediately rushed to catch the falling girl to prevent her from drowning.
"His hands were clenched into fists and he threatened to beat us, but he didn't," the grandmother was quoted as saying.
Phillips told police that the girl ran into him and he thought no one was attending to the girl so he threw her into the water.
The girl's family accepted the man's apology, police said.
