NZ probe as Chinese woman found dead
The Chinese Embassy in New Zealand yesterday confirmed that a 37-year-old Chinese woman had been killed at her home in Wellington suburb of Mirama and that police had launched a homicide investigation.
Fu Youwen, director of the embassy’s consular section, said the woman had a Chinese passport and had moved to New Zealand in 2006 from north China’s Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region.
The embassy and New Zealand police were trying to contact her family members in China, Fu said.
Police said the woman suffered a violent attack and could have been lying undiscovered for days.
The body of the 37-year-old mother of two was found on Sunday by a male friend who had not heard from her for several days.
The detective leading the investigation, Senior Sergeant John van den Heuvel, said the woman had not been seen or heard from since Thursday evening.
Van den Heuvel said the woman had children aged five and nine who were not at the house when their mother’s body was found.
He said the children were now with other family members.
The woman’s name has not been released as the family in China had yet to be notified.
Police said they were seeking to speak to anyone who may have seen any people or vehicles at the property between Thursday evening and late Sunday afternoon.
