Nagging relatives drove shoplifter

RELATIVES who pestered a woman to get married drove her to steal 1,600 yuan (US$234) worth of goods from a supermarket, hoping to be jailed for theft to escape their nagging.

Parents broke up their daughter's five-year relationship last summer because her boyfriend was too poor, Xinhua news agency reported today.

But after her sister got married last year, the parents of 29-year-old Song kept pestering her to form an 'ideal marriage" as soon as possible, the report said.

Song told Shandong Province police that she couldn't bear their nagging every day and thought living in a detention house would be better. At first she stole a chicken leg but failed to get caught.

Next day she stole shrimps and chocolate from a supermarket in Linyi City but still failed to get caught. She was only arrested while trying to steal 3.5 kilograms of nuts.

Unfortunately, her efforts to be jailed didn't pay off. Prosecutors dismissed the case because it was her first offence and the value of goods stolen was small.
