Naked beggar and her father returned to their hometown
A NAKED six-year-old girl who was seen begging with a cigarette in her mouth on a street has been sent back to her hometown along with her mentally ill father, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
The case drew public outrage after pictures of the naked girl begging on a street in Nanjing City, capital of Jiangsu Province, with a man claiming to be her father, appeared online.
Nanjing police confirmed the man, Zhou Chongguang, 46, is the girl's father, according to Xinhua.
On Wednesday night, they sent Zhou and his daughter back to their hometown in Sihong County, Jiangsu, the report said.
According to Li Mingshan, a police officer with the Nanjing City Public Security Bureau, both of the girl's parents are mentally ill.
They didn't marry but had two children, Li said. Zhou and the girl came to Nanjing to beg because the family is extremely poor, he said.
Officials in Chenlong Village, where the family lives, have arranged a subsistence allowance for them, Xinhua reported.
'He is a disgrace'
According to Modern Express, the girl was first seen begging on June 26 near a subway station. Residents took photos of the naked girl lying on the ground while smoking a cigarette and called police, the report said.
"No one would throw a penny to that man if his daughter was not around," one resident told the newspaper. "He is such a strong man and yet he doesn't work to support his family while forcing his daughter to beg on the streets. He is a disgrace."
On Tuesday morning, the girl was again seen begging near the same subway station. This time she was wearing a dirty green dress while Zhou sat next to her, according to the newspaper.
The girl told the newspaper she didn't wear clothes because she could "earn more."
Offer refused
Employees from the city's homeless shelter offered Zhou and the girl water and bread. They also asked them to come to the shelter to get cleaned up, but Zhou refused.
"I will not go to the shelter and nor will my kid. I don't need help," Zhou reportedly told the shelter employees.
Zhou told the newspaper he had two children, the six-year-old girl beside him and an eight-year-old son in his hometown, adding that his wife ran away about five years ago.
Zhou was also cited as saying he didn't want to be a sanitation worker as the pay is low and the work too tiring.
