Naked carp flourishing in Qinghai
China’s largest saltwater lake contains 23 times as many naked carp as it did in the 1980s thanks to preservation efforts that include a ban on fishing, officials in northwest China’s Qinghai Province said yesterday.
The provincial fishing bureau said there are now 60,000 tons of the rare species in the lake.
Fishing for naked carp has been banned in the lake since 2011.
Despite that, 14 people were arrested earlier this year for violating the ban. A total of 339 kilograms of fish were also seized in 16 separate cases.
Qinghai Lake is a major breeding ground for naked carp, which take 10 years to grow to their full size of about 500 grams.
The population in the lake has been bolstered over the years with the release of artificially bred fish.
Before 1960, there were 320,000 tons of naked carp in the lake, but after decades of overfishing the species was on the brink of extinction.
