Naked girl, 6, begs for coins in Nanjing

A six-year-old girl was seen begging for coins wearing nothing but with a cigarette in her mouth on a street in Nanjing as she was forced by her father who refused to work and rejected social aids.
The father surnamed Zhou, a 46-year-old Jiangsu native, said his daughter had earned him more than 600 yuan in the past six days by begging nakedly, which is much more than he could earn by farming in his hometown or doing some heavy labor works.
The girl, nicknamed Zhou Xiaoxiao, told a local reporter that she was not wearing any clothes because she could "earn more money".
Nanjing police said they are investigating their identities to see whether the man is the father of the girl, after pictures recording the girl begging were widely spread on the Internet, sparking public outrage, the Modern Express reported.
According to the newspaper, the girl was first seen begging nakedly last Wednesday near a subway station in Nanjing. Residents pictured the naked girl lying on the ground while smoking a cigarette and they alarmed the police.
Some residents told the reporter that they believed the man sitting beside the girl was not his father as no father would let his daughter smoke at such an early age and beg nakedly in public.
"No one would throw a penny to that man if his daughter is not around," said a local resident, "He is such a strong man and yet he doesn't work to support his family but force his daughter into begging. This is so humiliating."
The police checked the ID card of the father after the residents reported the case and they said they are now investigating the man to see whether he is the father of the girl.
On Tuesday morning, the girl was again seen begging on the same location near the subway station. This time she was wearing a dirty green dress while her father was sitting next to him, according to the newspaper.
Officials with the city's shelter for homeless people came to aid the father and daughter, offering water and bread to them. The officials asked to take them to the shelter for showers and other supports, but the man immediately rejected the helps.
"No, I will not go to the shelter and nor will my kid. I don't need any help," said Zhou.
Zhou told the newspaper that he had two children, the six-year-old girl beside him and an eight-year-old son in his hometown.
Zhou said his wife abandoned the family and ran away about five years ago and he had to support the family by lending a small farm land to others to earn about 1,000 yuan each year.
But the money is not enough to support the family, so he became a professional beggar and forced his daughter to beg with him.
Zhou said he didn't want to work as a city sanitation worker as the pay is not high and the work is too tiring. He said his daughter had already earned him more than 600 yuan in the past six days.
