Names released of 9 Chinese on fatal flight

AUTHORITIES in Brazil yesterday released the identities of the nine Chinese citizens who were among the 228 people aboard the Air France jetliner that crashed at sea on Monday, and two of missing had Shanghai connections.
The Chinese passengers on the flight were Zhuo Jiachun of Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies Co, six executives of the Benxi Iron and Steel Group in northeast China's Liaoning Province, Hubei Province native Chen Qingwei and Xiao Xiang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The jet crashed in the Atlantic Ocean while en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.
The 27-year-old Zhuo, who was employed in Huawei's Rio de Janeiro office, was described as outgoing, warmhearted and a hard worker, according to a business associate.
Zhuo, a native of Changchun City in Jilin Province, worked for the company's Shanghai office in late 2006 and lived on Shanyin Road in Hongkou District.
"He was really sharp at work," a man surnamed Fan told the Shanghai Morning Post.
The Benxi officials, who left China on May 17 to visit iron ore mining companies in Brazil and Australia, consisted of four men and two women. All were senior officials of Benxi, a major steel maker in Liaoning.
The six were Li Mingwen, deputy general manager of the group; Zhang Qingbo, assistant manager; Sun Lianyou, head of the Benxi Iron & Steel factory; Shen Zuobin, head of the group's raw material department; Gao Xing, a division manager; and Chen Chiping, a deputy manager of a company under Benxi Group.
Benxi said it has set up a team to address the tragedy and will arrange trips to France for the victims' relatives as soon as possible.
The child of the 44-year-old Li remains unaware of his father's death as he awaits the country's national college entrance exam, according to the Shanghai Evening Post.
Among the others missing, Chen Qingwei was a native of Wuhan City in Hubei.
The 35-year-old went to the United States to study at about age 14 and was in Brazil pursuing immigration. After Paris, he was due to go on to Shanghai to visit his 90-year-old grandmother.
Also on the flight was Xiao Xiang, a senior physics researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He took the flight after completing a research project in Brazil.
