THE former top land official in Nanchang, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, has been jailed for life for taking nearly 6 million yuan (US$879,054) in bribes and embezzling another 1 million yuan of public funds.

Fuzhou City Intermediate People's Court in Jiangxi decided the verdict on Zhou Hongwei, former director of Nanchang State Land Resources Bureau, and confiscated all his personal property, China News Service reported today.

Zhou has appealed for a second trial to Jiangxi Province Higher People's Court.

Zhou was convicted of taking 3.64 million yuan, US$125,000, 20,000 euros (US$27,259) and HK$550,000 (US$70,866) in cash as well as a property valued at 378,735 yuan from a businessman surnamed Xu from 2001 to 2009, the court said.

When he was the director of the land bureau's suburban branch, he embezzled another 1 million yuan of public funds. Zhou has returned 2.14 million yuan and the court is still trying to retrieve the rest.
